The key idea

Choose a channel around the buying situation and a verifiable action. Connect the ad, page and inquiry.

Choose your first advertising channel around the buying situation, the material you can produce and the action you can handle. Opening three ad accounts will not resolve an unclear offer.

This guide offers a working decision framework. Every scenario is hypothetical; none is a client result or a sales forecast.

Define the action first

“Get visibility” leaves too much open. “Receive inquiries from companies planning to replace their website” gives the ad, landing page and form a shared task.

Write down what makes an inquiry valid: a reachable person, a relevant need and enough information to respond. Exclude tests, spam and duplicates. A WhatsApp click indicates an attempt to open the channel; counting a conversation requires evidence that it happened.

Before: “We need Instagram, TikTok and Google.” After: “We will test one landing-page offer for product launches, with one message, one page and a verifiable inquiry.” The second brief provides a basis for decisions.

Match the channel to the journey

  • People search for a specific solution: assess Google Search. Check relevant queries, offer availability and a page that answers the query.
  • The proposition becomes clear when seen: assess Instagram/Facebook through Meta Ads. Check whether the creative explains the offer and supports the next step.
  • You can demonstrate the product in vertical video: assess TikTok. Check your ability to record, adapt and review creative regularly.
  • The purchase needs a video explanation: assess YouTube. Check the script and measurement appropriate to the format.

This is Umbral’s assessment framework, not a platform rule. Several channels may fit. Google describes Search campaigns as a way to reach people already searching for products or services. That does not establish demand for your offer; investigate the actual market and queries. Google Search campaign documentation.

Instagram and Facebook advertising are managed through Meta Ads. Selecting Meta does not mean that every placement needs investment. Review the options available in the account and the selected optimization action before approval.

Three hypothetical starting points

A service people request by name. An industrial equipment repair business serves a defined area. Start by examining relevant Search queries and excluding intentions it cannot serve, such as job searches or free manuals. Its landing page should explain the service, coverage and information needed for an assessment.

A product that benefits from demonstration. A fictional brand launches a folding lamp. A short video can show its open size, folding mechanism and use. Assess Meta or TikTok according to the material the team can sustain and the interest it can verify. Reposting one file does not replace checking framing, text and the next action.

Software for an unfamiliar task. A fictional team offers workspace booking software. Prepare a demonstration and a page explaining who books, what happens next and how to start. If people cannot follow the process, fix the explanation before adding more channels.

Give each creative a job

An ad can introduce a problem, demonstrate a difference or address an objection. Two color changes are not two different messages. Make the variants distinguishable and record what each is intended to teach you.

For TikTok, check vertical framing, sound and interface safe zones. These are platform starting points, not performance guarantees. Open with the situation, add readable captions and review the result on a phone. TikTok creative guidance.

Continue the ad’s promise on the destination page. A product-launch landing-page ad should lead to that offer, its scope and a clear next action. A generic homepage adds another search to the journey.

Agree on measurement before launch

  • Link CTR: link clicks / impressions × 100. Identify the click type.
  • Cost per observed visit: media spend / recorded campaign visits.
  • Valid inquiries: received and reviewed contacts, excluding tests, spam and duplicates.
  • Inquiry conversion: attributable inquiries / observed sessions in the same period × 100.
  • Cost per valid inquiry: media spend / attributable valid inquiries.

When the denominator is zero or the source is missing, record “no data.” The final metric excludes production and agency fees; assess those separately for total cost. Preserve the reporting period, timezone, source and attribution window.

Use consistent source, medium, campaign and creative names. An editorial Instagram link could use source instagram, medium organic_social and campaign channel_guide. Paid links need a different medium. Parameters identify referring campaigns; they do not establish causality. Google Analytics UTM guidance.

Video views are not a common unit across all platforms. YouTube itself distinguishes formats and counting rules. Compare each metric against its definition and keep attention separate from received inquiries. Google Ads video metrics.

Set a reviewable limit and decision

Separate media, production, page development and measurement. Agree on a spending limit and review date before activation. No universal amount makes every test conclusive.

Review delivery errors and inquiry quality first. When visits arrive without inquiries, inspect clarity, the form and the promise carried over from the ad. When visits are missing, review delivery and relevance. Small samples can support qualitative improvements; one inquiry does not establish a winning channel.

Calculate how much you can pay for a customer before preparing the test. Enter one sale’s value, its direct costs and the amount you want to retain. Add a known close rate to calculate a limit per inquiry. This does not predict sales or select a channel. To develop the offer, creative and measurement, plan a campaign with Umbral.
